Fishing Shirt Size and Fit Guide

How to measure for a sun shirt, how to check fit for casting, and where to find the size chart for each Alafia Cast Co. shirt and hoodie.

Where the size charts are

Open the product from any collection and tap "Size chart" on the product page. Men's, women's, youth and toddler cuts each have their own chart. Check the one for the shirt you're buying.

How to measure

Lay a shirt that fits you well flat on a table. Measure across the chest from armpit to armpit. Measure the body length from the top of the shoulder to the hem. Compare those numbers to the product's chart. If the chart measures something different, go by the chart.

Room to cast

Put on the shirt you measured and reach forward and overhead like you're casting. If it pulls across your back or rides up at the waist, look for more room on the chart.

Kids and toddlers

Youth and toddler shirts have their own charts on their product pages. Measure a shirt that fits your kid now.

How to Choose a Fishing Sun Shirt · Anatomy of a Sun Shirt

Use the chart’s method first

Our product-page chart is the authority for the cut you are ordering. The steps here are general measuring guidance, not a replacement chart. Read the labels on the chart before measuring. A flat shirt width is not the same thing as the circumference of your body. Do not compare those numbers as if they used the same method.

If the chart uses body measurements, measure your body. If it uses garment measurements, lay out a shirt that fits you and measure that garment. Keep the tape flat and record which method you used. If the chart asks for a different starting point, follow it. This page supplies no garment dimensions and no size conversion between cuts.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends loose-fitting sun clothing because tight fabric stretches and can let more UV pass through. That is the protection reason for leaving room. Our casting check is practical fit guidance, not a product measurement or a guarantee that one letter size works for every angler.

Chest, sleeve and body length

For a general body chest measurement, run a tape around the fullest part of the chest under the arms. Stand naturally rather than pulling the shoulders back. Keep the tape level. Record the result without adding a made-up allowance, then compare it only with a chart that asks for body chest circumference.

For a flat shirt chest measurement, smooth the shirt on a table without stretching it. Measure across from armpit to armpit, as the earlier instructions describe. Do not double that width unless the product chart tells you to use circumference. Keep a note of the shirt and cut you measured so you can check your comparison before ordering.

For general sleeve guidance, measure from the center back of the neck, over the shoulder and along the arm to the wrist. A product chart may instead measure from a shoulder seam. Those are different starting points. Use the chart’s method, not whichever number looks closest to a size you expected to buy.

For body length, measure from the high point of the shoulder toward the hem of a shirt laid flat. Smooth wrinkles without pulling the fabric longer. The chart may name a different point or show a diagram. Follow that diagram when it differs from this general guidance. A familiar tee is useful only if you measure it in the same way as the chart.

Move before choosing a size

As a practical fit check, put on the shirt you used for comparison. Reach forward as if you were making a cast. Raise your arms and bend toward the tackle you would reach on a boat or pier. Notice if the hem lifts enough to expose skin or the sleeves pull away from the wrists. Make that check before deciding you need another size.

Look at the back and shoulder area during the reach. If it pulls tight, compare the next chart option rather than guessing that every brand needs the same size increase. Extra room should let you move without turning the sleeves into loose fabric around your hands. This is fit advice, not a new measurement recommendation.

A sun hoodie needs a hood check too. Put it up, turn your head and look down as if watching a line. Check the ears and back of the neck. A hood that you always take down does not keep those areas covered. Our hoodie guide explains that choice without claiming the fabric cools you or protects skin outside it.

Layering without buying blind

As general clothing guidance, a sun hoodie can sit over a light base layer on a cool morning or serve as a light layer on a winter boat. Make the reach check with that base on. If you only compare the fit over bare skin, you have not checked the setup you plan to wear.

A rain shell can go over the sun layer when rain comes. That is a layering suggestion, not storm-safety advice. The shirt is for sun coverage, not fleece warmth. Do not use a loose fit as proof that it will be comfortable in any heat or weather. Choose the trip and the layers together.

Read How to choose a fishing sun hoodie for the hood check, and How to choose a fishing sun shirt for crew and tee choices. Our Anatomy of a Sun Shirt keeps the confirmed sun-shirt features in one place.

Measure each child separately

For general family fit guidance, measure a shirt the child wears now and check the youth or toddler product chart. Leave reasonable room to grow without choosing sleeves that get in the way of the hands. Growth room is a household fit decision, not a number we can supply without the chart.

Have the child reach and bend in the comparison shirt. Check where the sleeve ends and whether the hem stays down. Do not select a youth size by age alone when the product chart uses measurements. Two kids on the same trip can need different cuts even if they want the same artwork.

Use the family fishing day guide for the rest of the outing. Browse Youth for the product and its own chart. Matching a crew is easier when each person checks their size before you place the order.

Fit is only one part of coverage

The AAD recommends a UPF label and says dry clothing protects better than wet. The AATCC flowchart describes U.S. testing and conditioning for textile labeling. Neither source gives us a missing product measurement. Do not use the UPF rating to guess how far a sleeve or hem reaches on your body.

The UPF shirt vs sunscreen guide explains exposed-skin protection. The Florida sun guide adds the long-day plan. For trip choices, use the Alafia River guide, seasonal fishing guide and piers guide. Pick the shirt after checking the outing, then check its chart before ordering.

What to wear

Check the garment’s rating and its own size chart. Use sunscreen on skin the clothing leaves exposed.

FAQ

These answers cover the choices and care steps discussed above.

Where is the size chart?
On each product page. Tap “Size chart.” Men’s, women’s, youth and toddler cuts have their own charts. Use the one for the exact shirt or hoodie you are ordering.
How do I measure for a fishing shirt?
For a flat garment comparison, measure chest from armpit to armpit and body length from the high shoulder point to the hem. If the chart uses body measurements or another method, follow that chart instead.
Can I exchange for a different size?
No. Every shirt is printed to order, so all sales are final. Under our refund policy, damaged, defective or incorrect orders must be reported within 30 days of delivery with the order number, description and photos.
Should I size up for casting room?
Do the reach check in a shirt you own, then compare the exact product chart. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends loose fit rather than stretched-tight fabric. That does not create a universal size-up rule.
How do I measure my chest?
As general body-measuring guidance, measure around the fullest chest point under the arms with the tape level. Use that result only with a chart requesting body circumference, not flat garment width.
Where does a sleeve measurement start?
General body sleeve guidance starts at the center back neck and runs over the shoulder to the wrist. A product chart may start at a shoulder seam. Follow its stated method.
Should I measure over a tee?
For a practical layering check, wear the light base you expect to use during the casting reach. Follow the chart’s measurement instructions rather than adding an invented amount of room.
How much growing room do kids need?
Use the child’s current fit and the exact youth or toddler chart. Leave practical growing room without loose sleeves interfering with hands. This guide does not supply a growth allowance or age-to-size conversion.
Does the UPF rating tell me how much skin is covered?
No. UPF describes protection through fabric. Check sleeves, hem and neckline while moving, then use sunscreen on skin the garment leaves exposed.
Can I use another Alafia cut’s chart?
Do not assume the charts match. Use the chart for the exact product and compare like measurements. Matching artwork across a crew does not mean matching cuts or sizes.
